HERZOG, HANS (1819–1894) , Swiss See also:general, was See also:born at Aarau. He became a Swiss See also:artillery See also:lieutenant in 1840, and then spent six years in travelling (visiting See also:England among other countries), before, he became a partner in his See also:father's business in 1846. In 1847 he saw his first active service (as artillery See also:captain) in the See also:short Swiss Sonderbund See also:war. In 186o he abandoned See also:mercantile pursuits for a purely military career, becoming See also:colonel and inspector-general of the Swiss artillery. In 187o he was See also:commander-in-See also:chief of the Swiss See also:army, which guarded the Swiss frontier, in the See also:Jura, during the Franco-See also:German War, and in See also:February 1871, as such, concluded the See also:Convention of Verrieres with General See also:Clinchant for the disarming and the interning of the remains of See also:Bourbaki's army, when it took See also:refuge in See also:Switzerland. In 1875 he became the commander-in-chief of the Swiss artillery, which he did much to reorganize, helping also in the reorganization of the other branches of the Swiss army. He died in 1894 at his native See also:town of Aarau. (W. A. B.
