All that his See also:father, See also:Arnold Houbraken (1660–1719), bequeathed to him was a See also:fine constitution and a pure love for See also:work. In 1707 he came to reside at See also:Amsterdam, where for years he had to struggle incessantly against difficulties. He commenced the See also:art of See also:engraving by studying the See also:works of Cornelis See also:Cort, Suyderhoef, See also:Edelinck and the Visschers. He devoted himself almost entirely to See also:portraiture. Among his best works are scenes from the See also:comedy of De Ontdekte Schijndeugd, executed in his eightieth See also:year, after Cornelis Troost, who was called by his countrymen the Dutch See also:Hogarth.
