HUCKNALL TORKARD , a See also:

town in the Rushcliffe See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Nottinghamshire, See also:England; 132 M. N.N.W. from See also:London by the See also:Great Central railway, served also by the Great See also:Northern and Midland See also:railways. Pop. (1901) 15,250. The See also:church of St See also:Mary Magdalene contains the See also:tomb of See also:Lord See also:Byron. There are extensive collieries in the vicinity, and the town has See also:tobacco and See also:hosiery See also:works. Small traces are found of Beauvale See also:Abbey, a Carthusian See also:foundation of the 14th See also:century, in the hilly, wooded See also:district W. of Hucknall; and 3 M. N. is Newstead Abbey, in a beautiful situation on the border of See also:Sherwood See also:Forest. This Augustinian foundation owed its origin to See also:Henry II. It came into the hands of the Byron See also:family in 1540, and the poet Byron resided in it at various times until 1818. There remain the See also:Early See also:English See also:west front of the church, a Perpendicular See also:cloister and the See also:chapter-See also:house; while in the See also:mansion, wholly restored since Byron's See also:time, and in the See also:demesne, many See also:relics of the poet are preserved. To the S. of Hucknall are traces of Gresley See also:Castle, of the 14th century.
