INVERCARGILL , the See also:chief See also:town of Southland See also:county, See also:South See also:Island, New See also:Zealand, 139 M. by See also:rail S.W. by W. from See also:Dunedin. Pop. (1906) 7299. It lies on a deep See also:estuary of the south See also:coast named New See also:River See also:Harbour, which receives several streams famous for See also:trout-fishing. It is the centre of the large grazing and farming See also:district of Southland; and has a number of factories, including breweries, foundries, woollen See also:mills and See also:timber-See also:works. The See also:plan of the town is rectangular, with wide streets; and there is a See also:fine open reserve. The harbour is deep and well sheltered, but the greater See also:part of the See also:trade passes through the neighbouring See also:Bluff Harbour, on which is Campbelltown, 17 M. S. of Invercargill by rail. Bluff Harbour is the See also:port of See also:call and departure for steamers for See also:Melbourne and See also:Hobart. Exports are See also:wool, preserved See also:meat and timber. The district of Southland was surveyed in 1841, but was reported unfavourable, and See also:settlement was delayed till 1857. Southland was a See also:separate See also:province between 1860 and 187o, but, failing financially as such, rejoined the See also:parent province of Otago. Invercargill became a See also:municipality in 187;1, and there are five suburban municipalities. The town is the See also:regular starting-point of a See also:journey to the famous lakes Wakatipu and Te Anau, which are approached by rail.
