JEREZ DE LOS CABALLEROS , a See also:

town of See also:south-western See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Badajoz, picturesquely situated on two heights overlooking the See also:river Ardila, a tributary of the See also:Guadiana, 12 M. E. of the Portuguese frontier. Pop. (1900), 10,271. The old town is surrounded by a Moorish See also:wall with six See also:gates; the newer portion is well and regularly built, and planted with numerous See also:orange and other See also:fruit trees. Owing to the lack of railway communication Jerez is of little commercial importance; its See also:staple See also:trade is in agricultural produce, especially in See also:ham and See also:bacon from the large herds of See also:swine which are reared in the surrounding See also:oak forests. The town is said to have been founded by See also:Alphonso IX. of See also:Leon in 1229; in 1232 it was ex-tended by his son St See also:Ferdinand, who gave it to the knights templar.
