KANGRA , a See also:

town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Jullundur See also:division of the See also:Punjab. The town, sometimes called Nagarkot, is situated 2409 ft. above the See also:sea. Pop. (190t), 4746. The Katoch.rajas had a stronghold here, with a fort and See also:rich temples. Mahmud of See also:Ghazni took the fort in 1009 and from one of the temples carried off a vast treasure. In 136o Kangra was again plundered, by Feroz Shah. The See also:temple of Devi Bajreshri was one of the See also:oldest and wealthiest in See also:northern India. It was destroyed, together with the fort and the town, by an See also:earthquake on the 4th of See also:April 1905, when 1339 lives were lost in this See also:place alone, and about 20,000 elsewhere. In 1855 the headquarters of the district were removed to the sanitarium of See also:Dharmsala. The district of Kangra extends from the Jullundur See also:Doab far into the See also:southern ranges of the See also:Himalaya. Besides some See also:Rajput states, annexed after the See also:Sikh See also:wars, it includes Lahul, See also:Spiti and See also:Kulu, which are essentially Tibetan.

Beas is the only important See also:river. See also:Area, 9978 sq. m., of which Kangra proper has only 2725. Pop. (r9o1), 768,124; See also:average See also:density 77 persons per sq. M., but with only one See also:person per sq. m. in Spiti.. See also:Tea cultivation was introduced into Kangra about r85o. The Palampur See also:fair, established by See also:government with a view to fostering See also:commerce with central See also:Asia, attracts a small concourse of Yarkandi merchants. The Lahulis carry on an enterprising See also:trade with Ladakh and countries beyond the frontier, by means of See also:pack See also:sheep and goats. See also:Rice, tea, potatoes, See also:opium, spices, See also:wool and See also:honey are the See also:chief exports. See Kangra District Gazetteer (See also:Lahore, 1906).
