KHORREMABAD , a See also:

town of See also:Persia, See also:capital of the See also:province of Luristan, in 33° 32' N., 48° 15' E., and at an See also:elevation of 4250 ft. Pop. about 6000. It is situated 138 m. W.N.W. of See also:Isfahan and 117 M. S.E. of See also:Kermanshah, on the right See also:bank of the broad but shallow Khorremabad See also:river, also called Ab-i-istaneh, and, See also:lower down, Kashgan Rud. On an isolated See also:rock between the town and the river stands a ruined See also:castle, the Diz-i-siyah (See also:black castle), the See also:residence of the See also:governor of the See also:district (then called Samha) in the See also:middle ages, and, with some See also:modern additions, one of them consisting of rooms on the See also:summit, called Felek ul aflak (See also:heaven of heavens), the residence of the See also:governors of .Luristan in the beginning of the 19th See also:century. At the See also:foot of the castle stands the modern residence of the governor, built c. 1830, with several spacious courts and gardens. On the See also:left bank of the river opposite the town are the ruins of the old See also:city of Samha. There are a See also:minaret 6o ft. high, parts of a See also:mosque, an See also:aqueduct, a number of walls of other buildings and a four-sided monolith, measuring 92 ft. in height, by 3 ft. See also:long and 23 broad, with an inscription partly illegible, commemorating Mahmud, a See also:grand-son of the Seljuk See also:king Malik Shah, and dated A.11. 517, or 519 (A.D. 1148–1150).
