KROONSTAD , a See also:

town of See also:Orange See also:River See also:Colony, 127 M. by See also:rail N.E. of See also:Bloemfontein and 13o m. S.W. of See also:Johannesburg. Pop. (1904), 7191, of whom 3708 were whites. Kroonstad lies 4489 ft. above the See also:sea and is built on the See also:banks of the Valsch River, a perennial tributary of the See also:Vaal. It is a busy town, being the centre of a See also:rich agricultural See also:district and of the See also:diamond and See also:coal-See also:mining See also:industry of the See also:north-western parts of the colony. It is also a favourite residential See also:place and resort of visitors from Johannesburg. It enjoys a healthy See also:climate, affords opportunities for boating rare in See also:South See also:Africa, and boasts a See also:golf-links. The See also:principal See also:building is the Dutch Reformed See also:church in the centre of the See also:market square. On the See also:capture of Bloemfontein by the See also:British during the Anglo-See also:Boer See also:War of 1899-1902 Kroonstad was chosen by the Orange See also:Free See also:State Boers as the See also:capital of the state, a dignity it held from the 13th of See also:March to the 11th of May 1900. On the following See also:day the town was occupied by See also:Lord See also:Roberts. The linking of the town in 1906 with the See also:Natal See also:system made the route via Kroonstad the shortest railway connexion between Cape Town and See also:Durban.
