LARAMIE , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Albany county, See also:Wyoming, U.S.A., on the Laramie See also:river, 57 M. by See also:rail N.W. of See also:Cheyenne. Pop. (1900) 8207, of whom 128o were See also:foreign-See also:born; (1905).7601; (1910) 8237. It is served by the See also:Union Pacific and the Laramie, See also:Hahn's See also:Peak & Pacific See also:railways, the latter extending from Laramie to Centennial (30 m.). The city is situated on the Laramie Plains, at an See also:elevation of 7165 ft., and is hemmed in on three sides by picturesque mountains. It has a public library, a See also:United States See also:Government See also:building and hospitals, and is the seat of the university of Wyoming and of a See also:Protestant Episcopal missionary bishopric. There is a See also:state See also:fish hatchery in the vicinity. The university (See also:part of the public school See also:system of the state) was founded in 1886, was opened in 1887, and embraces a See also:College of Liberal Arts and See also:Graduate School, a Normal School, a College of See also:Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, an Agricultural Experiment Station (established by a Federal See also:appropriation), a College of See also:Engineering, a School of See also:Music, a Preparatory School and a Summer School. Laramie is a See also:supply and distributing centre for a live-stock raising and See also:mining region—particularly See also:coal mining, though See also:gold, See also:silver, See also:copper and See also:iron are also found. The Union Pacific Railroad See also:Company has See also:machine shops, repair shops and See also:rolling See also:mills at Laramie, and, a See also:short distance S. of the city, See also:ice-houses and a tie-preserving plant. The manufactures include See also:glass, See also:leather, See also:flour, See also:plaster and pressed See also:brick, the brick being made from shale obtained in the vicinity. The See also:municipality owns and operates the See also:water-See also:works; the water is obtained from large springs about 21 M. distant.

Laramie was settled in 1868, by See also:

people largely from New See also:England, See also:Michigan, See also:Wisconsin and See also:Iowa, and was named in See also:honour of Jacques Laramie, a See also:French See also:fur trader. It was first chartered as a city in 1868 by the legislature of Dakota, and was rechartered by the legislature of Wyoming in 1873.
