THOMAS (1692-1748) , founder of the Lowndean professorship of See also:astronomy at See also:Cambridge university, See also:England, was See also:born in 1692, both his See also:father and See also:mother being See also:Cheshire landowners. In 1725 he was appointed See also:provost See also:marshal of See also:South Carolina, a See also:post he preferred to fill by See also:deputy. In 1727 Lowndes claimed to have taken a prominent See also:part in inducing the See also:British See also:government to See also:purchase Carolina, but he surrendered his patent when the See also:transfer of the See also:colony to the See also:crown was completed. His patent was renewed in 1730, but he resigned it in 1733. He then brought various impractical schemes before the government to check the illicit See also:trade in See also:wool between See also:Ireland and See also:France; to regulate the See also:paper currency of New England; and to See also:supply the See also:navy with See also:salt from brine, &c. He died on the 12th of May 1748. By his will he See also:left his inherited Cheshire properties to the university of Cambridge for the See also:foundation of a See also:chair of astronomy and See also:geometry.
