This district, which comprises the See also:coal-mines of Lisichansk and the See also:anthracite mines of Gorodishche, occupies about 110,000 acres on the See also:banks of the Donets river. Although it is mentioned in the 16th See also:century, and coal was discovered there at the See also:time of See also:Peter the See also:Great, it was not until r795 that an Englishman, Gascoyne or Gaskoin, established its first See also:iron-See also:works for supplying the See also:Black See also:Sea See also:fleet and the southern fortresses with guns and shot. This proved ,a failure, owing to the great distance from the sea; but during the See also:Crimean See also:War the iron-works of Lugan again produced shot, See also:shell and See also:gun-carriages. Since 1864 agricultural implements, See also:steam-engines, and machinery for beetroot See also:sugar-works, distilleries, &c., have been the See also:chief manufactures. There is an active See also:trade in See also:cattle, See also:tallow, wools, skins, See also:linseed, See also:wine, See also:corn and manufactured wares.
