MACLAREN, See also:CHARLES (1782-1866) , Scottish editor, was See also:born at Ormiston, See also:Haddingtonshire, on the 7th of See also:October 1782, the son of a See also:farmer and See also:cattle-dealer. He was almost entirely self-educated, and when a See also:young See also:man became a clerk in See also:Edinburgh. In 1817, with others, he established the Scotsman See also:news-See also:paper in Edinburgh and at first acted as its editor. Offered a See also:post as clerk in the See also:custom See also:house, he resigned his editorial position, resuming it in 182o, and resigning it again in 1845. In 182o Maclaren was made editor of the See also:sixth edition of the See also:Encyclopaedia Britannica. From 1864–1866 he was See also:president of the See also:Geological Society of Edinburgh, in which See also:city he died on the loth of See also:September 1866.
