city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Harrison county, See also:Texas, U.S.A., about 145 M. E. by S. of See also:Dallas. Pop. (189o), 7207; (1900) 7855 (3769 negroes); (1910) 11,452. Marshall is served by the Texas & Pacific and the Marshall & See also:East Texas See also:railways, which have large shops here. Wiley University was founded in 1873 by the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal See also:Church, and See also:Bishop See also:College, was founded in 188r by the See also:American Baptist See also:Home See also:Mission Society and incorporated in 1885. Marshall is situated in a region growing See also:cotton and See also:Indian See also:corn, vegetables, small fruits and See also:sugar-See also:cane; in the surrounding See also:country there are valuable forests of See also:pine, See also:oak and See also:gum. In the vicinity of the city there are several lakes (including See also:Caddo See also:Lake) and springs (including Hynson and Rosborough springs). The city has a cotton compress, and among its manufactures are cotton-See also:seed oil, See also:lumber, See also:ice, foundry products and canned goods. The See also:municipality owns and operates the waterworks. Marshall was first settled in 1842, was incorporated in 1843, and received a city See also:charter in 1848; in 1909 it adopted the See also:commission See also:form of See also:government.
