botany, the See also:common name for See also:plants of the genus Polygala (natural See also:order Polygalaceae), a large genus widely dispersed in temperate and tropical regions and represented by a few See also:species in See also:Britain. The common species, P. vulgaris, is a small wiry perennial found on heaths and in meadows through-out the See also:British Isles. The stems are 2 to Io in. See also:long and See also:bear narrow rather tough leaves and small, i to s in. long, See also:white, See also:pink, See also:blue, See also:lilac or See also:purple See also:flowers. The flowers (see fig.) are See also:peculiar in See also:form and arrangement of parts; they have five See also:free sepals the two inner of which (b) are large petaloid and winglike, forming the most conspicuous See also:part of the See also:flower; the petals are See also:united below with the sheath of the eight stamens forming a See also:tube split at the See also:base behind; their form recalls that of the See also:pea See also:family. The name Polygala is from the See also:Greek 7roXus, much and yltka, See also:milk, the plant being supposed to increase the yield of milk in cows. Some species with showy flowers are known in cultivation as greenhouse, or See also:hardy ennual or perennial, herbs or shrubs. The See also:root of P. See also:Senega, snake-root, a See also:North See also:American species is See also:officinal. See also:Sea milkwort is the common name for Glaux maritima, a small succulent See also:herb found on seashores and in estuaries in the British Isles; it belongs to the See also:primrose order (See also:Primulaceae).
