He was the second favourite of Gaston, See also:duke of See also:Orleans, the weak See also:brother of See also:Louis XIII., succeeding See also:Antoine de Laage, duc de See also:Puylaurens, in this position in 1635. He planned the assassination of See also:Cardinal See also:Richelieu at the See also:camp of See also:Amiens in 1636, a See also:plan which failed through the cowardice of Orleans. Montresor was obliged to spend the next six years on his See also:estate, but in 1642 he entered into the See also:plot of Cinq See also:Mars against Richelieu. On its failure he escaped to See also:England, but his estates were confiscated. Returning after Richelieu's See also:death, he entered into the intrigues of the See also:period just preceding the See also:Fronde, and was imprisoned in the See also:Bastille, then in See also:Vincennes, having risked his safety by coming back from See also:exile in See also:Holland to aid the duchess of Chevreuse. See also:Mazarin attempted to win him over in vain, but in 1653 he made his submission to the victorious See also:minister, and from that See also:time on played no See also:part in public See also:life. He had three See also:children by Mlle de See also:Guise, with whom he had a lasting liaison. His Memoires have preserved his name from the oblivion other-See also:wise awaiting such intriguers; they are written with naive frankness and are extremely interesting. They are printed by A. See also:Petitot and Monmerque in Collection See also:des memoires relatifs a l'histoire de See also:France (See also:Paris, 1876).
