MONT GENEVRE , a very easy and remarkable pass (6083 ft.) between See also:

France and See also:Italy, which is now considered by high authorities to have been crossed by See also:Hannibal, as it certainly was by See also:Julius See also:Caesar, See also:Charles VIII., and in the See also:war of 1859. An excellent See also:carriage-road mounts in 7 M. from See also:Briancon, at the very See also:head of the See also:Durance valley, to the pass. On the See also:French See also:side of the See also:divide is the See also:village of Bourg Mont Genevre, and on the See also:Italian side that of Clavieres, both inhabited all the See also:year See also:round, as the pass runs See also:east and See also:west, and is thus sheltered from the See also:north See also:wind. A descent of 5 M. leads down to Cesanne in the See also:Doria Riparia valley, which is followed for 5 in. more to Oulx (17 M. from Briancon), on the Mont Cenis railway.
