MORGANTOWN , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of Monongalia county, See also:West See also:Virginia, U.S.A., on the See also:Monongahela See also:river, about 50 M. S.E. of See also:Wheeling. Pop. (189o), Io1; (Igo0), 1895; (1910 See also:census), g15o. The city is served by the See also:Baltimore & See also:Ohio and the Morgantown & Kingwood See also:railways, and by several steamboat lines, the Monongahela being navigable to See also:Fairmont, about 25 M. above Morgantown. Morgantown is the seat of the West Virginia University (co-educational), formed from the Monongalia See also:Academy (incorporated, 1814) and the Woodburn See also:Female See also:Seminary (incorporated, 1858), and chartered in 1867 as the Agricultural See also:College of West Virginia; in 1868 the See also:present name was adopted. In 1908 the university had 8o instructors and 1534 students. See also:Coal, See also:glass-See also:sand and See also:limestone are found in- the vicinity of Morgantown. The first See also:settlement here was made about 1768 by the See also:brothers See also:David and Zackwill See also:Morgan, and was named in See also:honour of the latter. It was incorporated as Morgan's See also:Town in 1785; and in 1905 a city See also:charter was granted to it after the See also:annexation of Greenmont (pop. 1900, 349), See also:Seneca (pop. 1900, 723), and See also:South Morgantown (pop.

1900, 405).
