MYITKYINA , the most northerly of the distracts of Upper See also:Burma in the See also:Mandalay See also:division, separated from See also:Bhamo See also:district in 1895. It is cut up into strips by comparatively See also:low parallel ranges of hills See also:running in a See also:general way See also:north and See also:south. The See also:chief See also:plain is that of Myitkyina, covering 600 sq. m. TO the See also:east of the See also:Irrawaddy, which bisects the district, it is low-lying and marshy. To the See also:west it rises to a higher level, and is mostly dry. Except in the hills inhabited by the Kachin tribes there are practically no villages off the See also:line of the Irrawaddy. The Indawgyi See also:lake, a See also:fine stretch of See also:water measuring 16 m. by 6, lies in the south-west of the district. A very small amount of cultivation is carried on, mostly without See also:irrigation. See also:Area, 10,640 sq. m.; estimated See also:population (Igor) 67,399, showing a See also:density of six persons to the square mile. More than See also:half the See also:total are Kachins, who inhabit the hills on both sides of the Irrawaddy. The headquarters See also:town, MYITKYINA, had in 1901 a population of 3618. It is the limit of See also:navigation on the Irrawaddy, and the See also:terminus of the railway from See also:Rangoon and See also:Sagaing.
