MYINGYAN , a See also:

district in the See also:Meiktila See also:division of Upper See also:Burma. It lies in the valley of the See also:Irrawaddy, to the See also:south of See also:Mandalay, on the See also:east See also:bank of the See also:river. See also:Area, 3137 sq. m. Pop. (1901), 356,052, showing an increase of 1% in the See also:decade and a See also:density of 114 inhabitants to the, square mile. The greater See also:part of the district is See also:flat, especially to the See also:north and along the See also:banks of the Irrawaddy. Inland the See also:country rises in gently undulating slopes. The most noticeable feature is Popa See also:hill, an See also:extinct See also:volcano, in the south-eastern corner of the district. The highest See also:peak is 4962 ft. above See also:sea-level. The See also:climate is dry and healthy, with high south winds from See also:March till See also:September. The See also:annual rainfall averages about 35 in. The temperature varies between ro6° and 700 F.

The See also:

ordinary crops are See also:millet, sesamum, See also:cotton, See also:maize, See also:rice, See also:gram, and a See also:great variety of peas and beans. The district as a whole is not well watered, and most of the old See also:irrigation tanks had fallen into disrepair before the See also:annexation. There are no forests, but a great See also:deal of See also:low scrub. The See also:lacquer See also:ware of Nyaung-u and other villages near See also:Pagan is noted throughout Burma. A considerable number of See also:Chinese inhabit Myingyan and the larger villages. The headquarters See also:town, MYINGYAN, stands on the Irrawaddy, and had a See also:population in 1901 of 16,139. It is the See also:terminus of the See also:branch railway through Meiktila to the See also:main See also:line from Mandalay to See also:Rangoon. The steamers of the Irrawaddy Flotilla See also:Company also See also:call here. A cotton-pressing See also:machine was erected here in the See also:time of See also:independent Burma, and still exists.
