See also:NAZARENES (Nag'copaiot) , an obscure Jewish-See also:Christian See also:sect, existing at the See also:time of See also:Epiphanius (fl. A.D. 370) in Coele-See also:Syria, See also:Decapolis (See also:Pella) and Basanitis (Cocabe). According to that authority (Panarion, See also:xxix. 7) they dated their See also:settlement in Fella from the time of the See also:flight of the Jewish Christians from See also:Jerusalem, immediately before the See also:siege in A.D. 7o; he characterizes them as neither more nor less than See also:Jews pure and See also:simple, but adds that they recognized the new See also:covenant as well as the old, and believed in the resurrection, and in the one See also:God and His Son Jesus See also:Christ. He cannot say whether their christological views were identical with those of See also:Cerinthus and his school, or whether they differed at all from his own. But See also:Jerome (Ep. 79, to See also:Augustine) says that they believed in Christ. the Son of God, See also:born of the Virgin See also:Mary, who suffered under Pontius See also:Pilate, and See also:rose again, but adds that, " desiring to be both Jews and Christians, they are neither the one nor the other." They used the Aramaic recension of the See also:Gospel according to See also:Matthew, which they called the Gospel to the See also:Hebrews, but, while adhering as far as possible to the See also:Mosaic See also:economy as regarded See also:circumcision, sabbaths, foods and the like, they did not refuse to recognize the apostolicity of See also:Paul or the rights of See also:heathen Christians (Jer., See also:Comm. in Isa., ix. I). These facts, taken along with the name (cf. Acts See also:xxiv. 5) and See also:geographical position of the sect, See also:lead to the conclusion that the Nazarenes of the 4th See also:century are, in spite of Epiphanius's distinction, to be identified with the See also:Ebionites (q.v.).
