In front of this See also:temple stood a sacrificial See also:altar as See also:long as the temple itself. The most famous of the temples of See also:Paestum, the so-called temple of See also:Neptune, comes next in point of date (about 420 B.C.). It is a See also:hexastyle peripteros with fourteen columns on each See also:side, and is remarkably well-preserved, both pediments and the See also:epistyle at the sides being still in situ. No traces of the decoration of the pediments and metopes have been preserved. The See also:cella, the See also:outer walls of which have to a See also:great extent disappeared, has two See also:internal rows of seven columns 41 ft. in See also:diameter, upon which rests a See also:simple epistyle, supporting a See also:row of smaller columns, so that the interior of the cella was in two storeys. The Temple of See also:Peace is a See also:building of the See also:Roman See also:period of the and See also:century B.C., with six Doric columns on the front, eight on the sides and none at the back; it was excavated in 183o and is now entirely covered up. Traces of a Roman See also:theatre and See also:amphitheatre (?) have also been found. The See also:circuit of the See also:town walls, well built of squared blocks of travertine, and 16 ft. thick, of the See also:Greek period, is almost entire; they are about 3 M. in circumference, enclosing an irregular, roughly rectangular See also:area. There were four See also:gates, that on the See also:east with a single arched opening being well-preserved.
