PANCH MAHALS ( = Five Districts) , a See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:northern See also:division of Bombay. See also:Area, 16o6 sq. m., pop. (1901), 261,020, showing a decrease of 17% in the See also:decade, owing to See also:famine. The administrative headquarters are at See also:Godhra, pop. (1901), 20,915. Though including Champaner, the old See also:Hindu See also:capital of See also:Gujarat, now a ruin, this See also:tract has no See also:history of its own. It became British territory as recently as 1861, by a See also:transfer from Sindhia; and it is the only district of Bombay proper that is administered on the non-regulation See also:system, the See also:collector being also See also:political See also:agent for See also:Rewa Kantha. It consists of two See also:separate parts, divided by the territory of a native See also:state. The See also:south-western portion is for the most See also:part a level See also:plain of See also:rich See also:soil; while the northern, although it comprises some fertile valleys, is generally rugged, undulating and barren, with but little cultivation. The See also:mineral products comprise See also:sandstone, See also:granite and other kinds of See also:building See also: The See also:principal crops are See also:maize, millets, See also:rice, See also:pulse and oilseeds; there are manufactures of See also:lac bracelets and lacquered toys; the See also:chief export is timber. Both portions of the district are crossed by the See also:branch of the Bombay and See also:Baroda railway from Anand, through Godhra and Dohad, to See also:Ratlam; and a chord See also:line, opened in 1904, runs from Godhra to Baroda See also:city.
