PEPERINO , an See also:

Italian name applied to a See also:brown or See also:grey volcanic See also:tuff, containing fragments of See also:basalt and See also:limestone, with disseminated crystals of See also:augite, See also:mica, See also:magnetite, See also:leucite, &c. The typical peperino occurs in the See also:Alban Hills, near See also:Rome, and was used by the ancients, under the name of lapis albanus, as a See also:building See also:stone and for the basins of fountains. Other tuffs and conglomerates in See also:Auvergne and elsewhere are also called peperino. The name originally referred to the dark coloured inclusions, suggestive of See also:pepper-corns. In See also:English the word has sometimes been written peperine.
