PORT See also:ADELAIDE , a port of Adelaide See also:county, See also:South See also:Australia, 71 M. by See also:rail N.W. of Adelaide. Pop. of the See also:town and suburbs (1901), 20,089. It is situated on an See also:estuary 9 M. from St See also:Vincent Gulf and is the See also:principal See also:shipping port of South Australia. Its wharves, equipped with See also:steam and travelling See also:cranes, and tram-ways, are 22 M. in extent; it has docks and a number of patent slips capable of taking up vessels of 300 to 1500 tons. There are also piers at See also:Semaphore and Larg's See also:Bay, on the other See also:side of Lefevre's See also:Peninsula some 2 M. distant, which are connected with Port Adelaide by rail. The See also:industries comprise See also:silver and See also:copper smelting, See also:brewing, sawmilling, ropemaking, flourmilling, See also:sugar-refining and yacht-See also:building. The See also:harbour is protected by two forts known as the Fort Glanville batteries. The suburbs, which are connected with the town by tramways, are Alberton, See also:Queenstown, Yatala, Rosewater and See also:Kingston-on-the-See also:Hill.
