RENNEVILLE, RENE AUGUSTE CONSTANTIN DE (1650-1723) , See also:French writer, was See also:born at See also:Caen in 1650. In consequence of his See also:Protestant principles, he See also:left See also:France for See also:Holland in 1699, and on his return three years later he was denounced as a See also:spy and imprisoned in the See also:Bastille, where he remained until 1713. During his imprisonment he wrote on the margins of a copy of Auteurs deguises (See also:Paris, 169o) poems which he called Otia bastiliaca. These were rediscovered by Mr See also:James Tregaski in Igoe. Renneville was set at See also:liberty through the intercession of See also:Queen See also:Anne, and made his way to See also:England, where he published his Histoire de la Bastille (7 vols., 1713–24), dedicated to See also:George I. At the See also:time of his See also:death in 1723 he was a See also:major of See also:artillery in the service of the elector of See also:Hesse. His other important See also:work is a Recueil See also:des voyages qui ont servi a l'etablissement de la Compagnie des Indes Orientales aux Provinces Unies (to vols., new ed., See also:Rouen, 1725).
