ROMSDAL , the valley of the See also:

river Rauma, in See also:Norway. The Rauma is a torrent descending from See also:Lake Lesjekogen to the Romsdal See also:Fjord on the See also:west See also:coast (62° 30' N.). The nearest See also:port is See also:Molde, from which steamers run to Veblungsnaes (30 m.) at the See also:foot of the valley. A See also:good road traverses the valley, which is one of the finest in See also:southern Norway, flanked by steep mountains terminating in abrupt peaks—Vengetinder (5960 ft.), Romsdalshorn (5105), Troldtinder (" See also:witch-peaks," 6oio) and others. Several waterfalls are seen, such as the Mongefos, the Vaermofos, falling nearly l000 ft., and the Slettafos. Lake Lesjekogen also drains from the opposite end by the Laagen or Lougen river to the Glommen, and so to the See also:Skagerrack, and the road follows its valley, the See also:Gudbrandsdal. The Romsdal gives ils name to an amt (See also:county) extending from the promontory of Stadt in the See also:south to See also:Ram Fjord in the See also:north, including the Stor, Molde, Halse and their See also:branch fjords, the ports of See also:Aalesund, Molde and Christiansund, and reaching inland to the Dovrefjeld.
