AALESUND , a seaport of See also:Norway, in See also:Romsdal amt (See also:county), 145 M. N. by E. from See also:Bergen. Pop. (1900) 11,672. It occupies two of the See also:outer islands of the See also:west See also:coast, Aspo and Norvii, which enclose the picturesque See also:harbour. Founded in 1824, it is the See also:principal See also:shipping-See also:place of Sondmore See also:district, and one of the See also:chief stations of the See also:herring See also:fishery. Aalesund is adjacent to e Jorund and Geiranger fjords, frequented by tourists. From e at the See also:head of Jorund a See also:driving-route strikes See also:south to the See also:Nord-See also:fjord, and from Merok on Geiranger another strikes inland to Otta, on the railway to Lillehammer and See also:Christiania. Aalesund.. is a See also:port of See also:call for steamers between Bergen, See also:Hull, See also:Newcastle and See also:Hamburg, and See also:Trondhjem. A little to the south of the See also:town are the ruins of the reputed See also:castle of Rollo, the founder, in the 9th See also:century, of the See also:dynasty of the See also:dukes of See also:Normandy. On the 23rd of See also:January 1904, Aalesund was the See also:scene of one of the most terrible of the many conflagrations to which See also:Norwegian towns, built largely of See also:wood, have been subject. Practically the whole town was destroyed, a See also:gale aiding the flames, and the See also:population had to leave the place in the See also:night at the See also:notice of a few minutes. Hardly any lives were lost, but the sufferings of the See also:people were so terrible that assistance was sent from all parts of the See also:kingdom, and by the See also:German See also:government, while the See also:British government also offered it.
