SANTANDER ,'a maritime See also:province of See also:northern See also:Spain, bounded N. by the See also:Bay of See also:Biscay, E. by the province of Biscay, S. by See also:Burgos and See also:Palencia, and W. by See also:Leon and See also:Oviedo. Pop. (1900) 276,003; See also:area 2ro8 sq. m. The province is traversed from See also:east to See also:west by the Cantabrian Mountains (q.v.), which in the Penas de See also:Europa reach a height of over 8600 ft., and send off numerous branches to the See also:sea. On the See also:north See also:side of the range the streams are all See also:short, the See also:principal being the Ason, the Miera, the Pas, the Besaya, the Saja and the Nana, which flow into the Bay of Biscay; See also:part of the province lies See also:south of the See also:watershed, and is drained by the upper See also:Ebro (q.v.). The province is traversed from north to south by the railway and high road from Santander by Palencia to See also:Madrid; the highest point on the railway (yenta de Pazozal) is 3229 ft. above the sea. Other See also:railways connect Santander with See also:Bilbao on the east and with Cabezona de la Sal on the west; there are also many See also:good See also:state, provincial and municipal roads, besides several narrow-See also:gauge See also:mining railways. Santander was part of the See also:Roman province of Cantabria, which, after passing under the See also:empire of the Goths, became the principality of See also:Asturias (q.v.). The portion called Asturia de See also:Santa Juliana, or See also:Santillana, was included in the See also:kingdom of Old See also:Castile, and, on the subdivision of the old provinces of Spain in 1833, became the province of Santander.
