SECULARISM , a See also:

term, applied specially (see See also:SECULAR) to the See also:system of social See also:ethics associated with the name of G. J. See also:Holyoake (q.v.). As the word implies, secularism is based solely on considerations of See also:practical morality with a view to the See also:physical, social and moral improvement of society. It neither affirms nor denies the theistic premises of See also:religion, and is thus a particular variety of See also:utilitarianism. Holyoake founded a society in See also:London which subsequently under the leadership of See also:Charles See also:Bradlaugh advocated the disestablishment of the See also:Church, the abolition of the Second Chamber and other See also:political and economic reforms. See Holyoake's Principles of Secularism (1885).
