SEONI , a See also:

town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Jubbulpore See also:division of the Central Provinces. The town is 2043 ft. above See also:sea-level, See also:half-way on the See also:Toad between See also:Nagpur and Jubbulpore. Pop. (19o1) 11,864. It was founded in 1774, and contains large public gardens, a See also:fine See also:market See also:place and a handsome tank. The DISTRICT OF SEONI forms See also:part of the See also:Satpura tableland, containing the headwaters of the See also:Wainganga. It is largely covered with See also:forest, and 40% of the inhabitants belong to aboriginal tribes. See also:Area 3206 sq. m. The district is remarkable for the beauty of its scenery and the fertility of its valleys. The See also:northern and western portions include the plateaus of Lakhnadon and Seoni; the eastern See also:section consists of the See also:watershed and elevated See also:basin of the Wainganga; and in the See also:south-See also:west is a narrow See also:strip of rocky See also:land known as Dongartal. The plateaus of Seoni and Lakhnadon vary in height from ',Soo to 2000 ft.; they are well cultivated and clear of See also:jungle, and their temperature is always moderate and healthy. Geologically the See also:north part of Seoni consists of See also:trap hills and the south of crystalline See also:rock.

soil of the plateaus is the See also:rich See also:black See also:cotton soil formed by distintegrated trap, of which about two-thirds of the district are said to consist; but towards the south, where cliffs of See also:gneiss and other See also:primitive formations occur, the soil is silicious and contains a large proportion of See also:clay. The See also:chief See also:river is the Wainganga, with its affluents the See also:Hit-1, See also:Sagar, Theii, Bijna and Thanwar; other streams are the Timar and the Sher, tributaries of the See also:Nerbudda. The See also:annual rainfall averages 53 in. The See also:population in 1901 was 327,709, showing a decrease of 12% in the See also:decade due to the effects of See also:famine. The See also:principal crops are See also:wheat, millets, See also:rice, See also:pulse, oil-seeds and cotton. Three lines of the See also:Bengal-Nagpur See also:system See also:traverse the district. There is also a town called Seoni, or Seoni-See also:Malwa, in the Central Provinces, a railway station in See also:Hoshangabad district. Pop. (1901) 7531. See R. A.
