He gained See also:great See also:influence among the reckless and unruly See also:young See also:Indians, and during the See also:Civil See also:War led attacks on See also:white settlements in See also:Iowa and See also:Minnesota, Though he had pretended to make See also:peace in 1866, from 1869 to 1876 he frequently attacked whites or Indians friendly to whites. His refusal to return to the See also:reservation in 1876, led to the See also:campaign in which See also:General See also:George A. See also:Custer (q.v.) and his command were massacred. Fearing See also:punishment for his participation in the See also:massacre, Sitting Bull with a large See also:band moved over into See also:Canada. He returned to the See also:United States in 1881, and after 1883 made his See also:home at the See also:Standing See also:Rock Agency. Rumours of a coming See also:Indian See also:Messiah who should sweep away the whites, and Indian dissatisfaction at the See also:sale of their lands, created such great unrest in Dakota in 1889—1890 that it was determined to See also:arrest Sitting Bull as a precaution. He was surprised and captured by Indian See also:police and soldiers on See also:Grand See also:river on the 15th of See also:December 189o, and was killed while his companions were attempting to See also:rescue him.
