TALIENWAN , an open See also:

bay or roadstead on the See also:east See also:side of the Liaotung See also:peninsula, See also:Manchuria. It was leased to See also:Russia by See also:China in 1898 with the See also:naval fortress of See also:Port See also:Arthur, from which it is distant 40 m., the See also:lease being transferred to See also:Japan in 1905. The See also:Russian See also:town of Dalny (now See also:Tairen) was built upon the See also:west side of the bay, known as Port See also:Victoria. Being See also:ice-See also:free all the See also:year See also:round, it has an See also:advantage over Niuchwang, which is frozen up for four months in the year. Niuchwang, however, lies much nearer to the See also:great producing and consuming districts of Manchuria. Talienwan is in railway connexion with Niuchwang and See also:Peking and via the Siberian railway with See also:Europe. It was the See also:rendezvous of the See also:British See also:fleet during the Anglo-China See also:war of 186o, whence the names Port Arthur and Port Victoria.
