TERBIUM [See also:symbol Tb, atomic See also:weight 159.2 (0=16)] , a metallic chemical See also:element belonging to the rare See also:earth See also:group; it was originally called erbia by its discoverer Mosander (see RARE EARTH). Pure terbium compounds were obtained by G. Urbain (Compt. rend., 1904 seq.) by fractional See also:crystallization of the See also:nickel See also:double nitrates, the See also:ethyl sulphates, and the See also:bismuth double nitrates of the terbium earths. Terbium appears to be trivalent. The See also:oxide is a See also:black or See also:brown See also:powder according as it is prepared from the exalate or sulphate, and when pure it is non-fluorescent, but mixed with gadolinia or alumina it possesses this See also:property. It yields colourless salts; the crystallized sulphate has the See also:formula Tb2(SO4),.8H2O.
