TIPPOG See also:SAHIB (1753—1799) , See also:sultan of See also:Mysore, son of Hyder See also:Ali (q.v.), was See also:born in 1753. He was instructed in military See also:tactics by See also:French See also:officers in the employment of his See also:father. In 1767 in the invasion of the Carnatic he commanded a See also:corps of See also:cavalry, and he distinguished himself in the Mahratta See also:War of 1775-79. On the outbreak of the first Mysore War in 178o he was put at the See also:head of a large See also:body of troops, and defeated Brathwaite on the See also:banks of the Coleroon in See also:February 1782. He succeeded his father in See also:December 1782, and in 1784 concluded See also:peace with the See also:British, and assumed the See also:title of sultan. In 1787—88 he subjugated the Nairs of See also:Malabar, and in 1789 provoked British invasion by ravaging the territories of the See also:raja of See also:Travancore.
