TIPPERARY , a See also:

market See also:town of Co. Tipperary, See also:Ireland. Pop. (See also:loot), 6281. It is beautifully situated near the See also:base of the Slieve na muck or Tipperary Hills, a See also:branch of the Galtee range, on the See also:Waterford & See also:Limerick See also:line of the See also:Great See also:Southern & Western railway, 3 M. S.E. of Limerick Junction and rro4 S.W. of See also:Dublin. It is governed by an See also:urban See also:district See also:council. It is situated in the centre of a See also:fine agricultural district, and its See also:butter market ranks next to that of See also:Cork. Condensed See also:milk is manufactured. The town is of great antiquity, but first acquired importance by the erection of a See also:castle by See also:King See also:John, of which there are no remains. A monastery founded for See also:Augustinians by See also:Henry III. gave a second impulse to its growth. The See also:gatehouse, all that remains of this See also:foundation, is the only See also:building of antiquity in the town.

Formerly Tipperary was a See also:

corporation from a See also:grant made in 1310 by See also:Edward II. New Tipperary was founded outside the town by Mr See also:William O'Brien in 1890 during the "See also:Plan of See also:Campaign" inaugurated to See also:boycott the See also:Smith-See also:Barry See also:estate, in See also:order to accommodate the tenants who vacated their holdings, but the See also:scheme was a failure, and the See also:place was abandoned and sold.
