TONAWANDA , a See also:

city of See also:Erie See also:county, New See also:York, U.S.A., about II m. by See also:rail N. of See also:Buffalo on the See also:Niagara See also:River at the mouth of Tonawanda See also:Creek (opposite See also:North Tonawanda), and on the Erie See also:Canal. Pop. (1900), 7421, of whom 1834 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (1910 See also:census), 8290. Tonawanda is served by the New York Central & See also:Hudson River and the Erie See also:railways, and is connected with Buffalo, Niagara Falls and See also:Lockport by electric lines. The See also:industries depend chiefly on electric See also:power generated by the Niagara Falls, 11 m. distant. There are See also:rolling-See also:mills, planing-mills, See also:ship-yards, and blast-furnaces, and among the manufactures are wooden See also:ware, See also:flour and See also:paper. The surrounding region was the See also:scene of hostilities during the Seven Years' See also:War, and the War of 1812. The first permanent See also:white See also:settlement was made about 1809, and Tonawanda was incorporated as a See also:village in 1854 and was chartered as a city in 1903.
