town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Tver, on the See also:river Tvertsa, 21 M. by See also:rail S.W. of the Likhoslavl, station of the St See also:Petersburg & See also:Moscow railway. Pop. (Igloo), 15,119. It See also:dates from the 11th See also:century, and the name (See also:market-See also:place) shows that this dependency of See also:Novgorod was a commercial centre. It was fortified with a See also:stone See also:wall, which only partially protected it from the attacks of See also:Mongols, See also:Lithuanians and Poles. Torzhok is celebrated in Russia for its embroidered See also:velvet and embroidered See also:leather-See also:work, for the manufacture of travelling bags, and for its See also:trade in See also:corn and See also:flour.
