TUMKUR , or ToontKOOR, a See also:

The town has a station on the See also:Madras & Southern Mahratta railway, 43 M. N.W. from See also:Bangalore. The See also:area of the district is 4158 sq. m. It consists chiefly of elevated See also:land intersected by See also:river valleys. A range of hills rising to nearly 4000 feet crosses it from See also:north to See also:south, forming the waterparting between the systems of the See also:Krishna and the See also:Cauvery. The See also:principal streams are the Jayamangala and the Shimsha. The See also:mineral See also:wealth of Tumkur is consider-able; See also:iron is obtained in large quantities from the See also:hill-sides; and excellent See also:building-See also:stone is quarried. The slopes of the Devaray-See also:durga hills, a See also:tract of 18 sq. m., are clothed with forests, in which large See also:game abounds, including tigers, leopards, bears and See also:wild hog. The See also:climate of Tumkur is equable and healthy; the See also:annual rainfall averages 39 in. The See also:population in igot was 679,162, showing an increase of 17% in the See also:decade. The cultivated products consist chiefly of millets, See also:rice, pulses and oil seeds.
