TWELVE TABLES , the tables of See also:

wood on which was engraved or painted the earliest codification of the See also:Roman See also:law. Originally ten in number, two others were afterwards added, containing supplemental See also:matter, and the whole See also:code was termed the Lex XII. Tabularum (Law of the Twelve Tables). (See ROMAN LAW and See also:ROME.) TWENTY-FOUR PARGANAS, THE, a See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:presidency See also:division of See also:Bengal, with an See also:area of 4844 sq. m. It occupies See also:part of the Gangetic See also:delta, See also:east of the See also:Hugli, surrounding (but not including) the See also:city of See also:Calcutta. It also includes the greater part of the almost uninhabited See also:Sundarbans (q.v.). The administrative headquarters are at See also:Alipur, a See also:southern suburb of Calcutta. The See also:country consists for the most part of a vast alluvial See also:plain, and is everywhere watered by numerous branches of the See also:Ganges. In 1901 the See also:population was 2,078,359, showing an increase of lo % in the See also:decade. See also:Rice is the See also:staple See also:crop, followed by jute, pulses and See also:sugar-See also:cane. The district is traversed by three See also:railways, two of which terminate at the ports of See also:Diamond See also:Harbour and See also:Port See also:Canning, but numerous See also:river channels are still the See also:chief means of communication. Apart from the suburbs of Calcutta, there is hardly a single real ,See also:town.

round Calcutta all the manufactures of a See also:great city are to be found, principally jute See also:mills and jute presses, See also:cotton mills and See also:paper mills, and also See also:government factories for rifles and See also:ammunition. The Twenty-four Parganas See also:form the See also:tract of which the zamindari or landlord rights were granted to the East India See also:Company after the See also:battle of See also:Plassey, while the See also:revenue arising therefrom was conferred upon See also:Clive, upon whose See also:death it reverted to the company.
