PLASSEY (Palasi) , a See also:village of See also:Bengal on the See also:river Bhagirathi, the See also:scene of See also:Clive's victory of the 23rd of See also:June 1757, over the forces of the See also:nawab Suraj-ud-Dowlah. The fall of See also:Calcutta and the " See also:Black Hole " atrocity led to instant See also:action by the See also:East See also:India See also:Company, and Clive, with as many troops as could be spared, undertook a See also:campaign against, the nawab, and soon reoccupied Calcutta. See also:Long and intricate negotiations, or rather intrigues, followed, and at the See also:time of the See also:battle the See also:loyalty of most of the nawab's generals had been effectually undermined, though assistance, active or passive, could hardly be counted on. With this doubtful See also:advantage, Clive, with 'too See also:European and 2100 native soldiers, and to See also:field-pieces, took the field against the nawab, who had 50,000 men, 53 heavy guns, and some See also:French See also:artillery under M. de St Frais. Only the river Bhagirathi separated Clive's little force from the entrenched See also:camp of the enemy, when the See also:English See also:leader, for once undecided, called a See also:council of See also:war. Clive and the See also:majority were against fighting, See also:Major See also:Eyre See also:Coote, of the 39th See also:Foot, and a few others for action. Coote's soldierly See also:advice powerfully impressed Clive, and after deep See also:consideration he altered his mind and issued orders to See also:cross the river. After a fatiguing See also:march, the force bivouacked in a See also:grove near Plassey See also:early on the 23rd. The nawab's See also:host came out of its lines and was See also:drawn up in a huge semicircle almost enclosing the little force in the grove, and St Frais' gunners on the right wing opened See also:fire. Clive replied, and was soon subjected to the converging fire of 5o heavy guns. For See also:hours the unequal fight was maintained, until a rainstorm stopped it. The English covered up their guns, but the enemy took no such precaution.

Mir Mudin, the only loyal See also:

general of the nawab's See also:army, thinking that Clive's guns were as useless as his own, made a disastrous See also:cavalry See also:charge upon them; he lost his own See also:life, and his colleagues then had the See also:game in their hands. Mir Jagar persuaded the nawab to retire into the entrenchments. St Frais stood fast until one of Clive's See also:officers, Major See also:Kilpatrick, successfully drove him in. Clive followed up this success by cannonading the camp at See also:close range. But the See also:rank and See also:file of the native army, ignorant of the treachery of their leaders, made a furious sortie. For a time Clive was hard pressed, but his cool general-See also:ship held its own against the undisciplined valour of the enemy, and, noticing Mir Jagar's See also:division in his See also:rear made no move against him, he led his troops straight against the See also:works. After a See also:short resistance, made chiefly by St Frais, the whole camp See also:fell. into his hands. At a cost of 23 killed and 49 wounded this See also:day's See also:work decided the See also:fate of Bengal. The historic grove of mangoes, in which Clive encamped on the previous See also:night, has been entirely washed away by changes in the course of the river; but other See also:relics of the day remain, and a See also:monument has recently been erected.
