VOLLENDAM , a small fishing See also:

village of See also:Holland in the See also:province of See also:North Holland, adjoining See also:Edam on the shores of the Zuider Zee. It is remarkable for the quaintness of the buildings and the picturesque See also:costume of the villagers, who are of a singularly dark and robust type. Many artists have been attracted to See also:settle here. Vollendam has its origin in the See also:building of the See also:great See also:sea-See also:dam for the new waterway to Edam in the See also:middle of the 14th See also:century. On the seaward See also:side of the See also:dike are some houses built on piles in the See also:style of See also:lake dwellings.
