WARRENPOINT , a seaport and watering-See also:

place of See also:county Down, See also:Ireland, the See also:terminus of a See also:branch of the See also:Great See also:Northern railway, by which it is 504 m. S.S.W. of See also:Belfast. Pop. (1901) 1817. It lies on the northern See also:shore of the beautiful See also:Carlingford Lough; behind it rise the Mourne Mountains, while across the lough are the Carlingford Hills, with Slieve Gullion. These hills afford shelter from inclement winds, and give Warrenpoint and other neighbouring watering-places on the lough a See also:climate which renders them as popular in See also:winter as in summer. There is a See also:quay here where large vessels can See also:discharge, and agricultural produce is exported. The shores of the lough are studded with See also:country seats lying picturesquely on the well-wooded See also:hill slopes; and nearly 3 M. E. of Warrenpoint (connected by See also:tramway) is See also:Rosstrevor, one of the most noted watering-places in Ireland, charmingly situated in a position open to the See also:sea, but enclosed on the See also:north and See also:east.
