Having passed his See also:early years at See also:Athens and See also:Constantinople, where his See also:father was attached to the Prussian See also:legation, he came in 1857 to See also:Germany, received his early schooling at the Padagogium at See also:Halle and the Franzosische Gymnasium in See also:Berlin, and, after passing through the See also:Cadet school, became, in 1863, an officer in the Prussian See also:army. He abandoned the military career two years later, but was recalled to the See also:colours in 1866 for the See also:war with See also:Austria. He next studied See also:law at the university of Berlin, and again served in the army during the Franco-Prussian War, 1870-71. In 1876 Wildenbruch was attached to the See also:foreign See also:office, which he finally quitted in 1900 with the See also:title of counsellor of legation. He achieved his first See also:literary successes with the epics See also:Vionville (1894) and See also:Sedan (1875). After See also:publishing a See also:volume of poems, Lieder and Balladen (Berl., 1877; 7th ed., 190o), he produced, in 1882, the tragedy, See also:Die Karolinger. Among his See also:chief dramas may be mentioned the tragedy Harold (1882); Die Quitzows (1888); Der Generalfe_ldoberst (1889); Die Haubenlerche (1891); Heinrich and Heinrichs Geschlecht (1895); Die Tochter See also:des See also:Erasmus (1900); and See also:Konig Laurin (1.902). Wildenbruch was twice (in 1884 and 1896) awarded the See also:Schiller See also:prize, and was, in 1892, created a See also:doctor of See also:philosophy honoris causa by the university of See also:Jena. He also wrote several volumes of See also:short stories (Novellen, 1883; Neue Novelten, 1885; Tiefe Nasser, 1397, &c.). He died on the 15th of See also:January 1909. Cf. B.
