From 1857 to 1873 he was director of the Botanical Gardens, See also:Melbourne, and not only introduced many See also:plants into Victoria, but made the excellent qualities of the See also:blue See also:gum See also:tree (See also:Eucalyptus globules) known all over the See also:world, and succeeded in introducing it into the See also:south of See also:Europe, North and South See also:Africa, See also:California, and the extra-tropical portions of South See also:America. For these services he was decorated by many See also:foreign countries, including See also:France, See also:Spain, See also:Denmark and See also:Portugal; was created K.C.M.G. in 1879, See also:baron of the See also:kingdom of Wurtemberg in 1871, and F.R.S. in 1861. He published eleven volumes of Fragmenta phytographica Australiae (1862–1881), two volumes of the Plants of Victoria (186o-1865), and other books on the Eucalyptus, Myoporaceae, Acacias, and Salsolaceae, all profusely illustrated. He also co-operated in the See also:production of G. See also:Bentham's See also:Flora Australiensis. He took a leading See also:part in promoting Australian exploration, especially the See also:Burke and See also:Wills expedition, which was the first to See also:cross the See also:continent, and in the various attempts to unravel the See also:mystery which attended the See also:fate of his See also:fellow-countryman See also:Ludwig Leichhardt (1813–1848).
