ABRAHAMITES , a See also:

sect of deists in Bohemia in the 18th See also:century, who professed to be followers of the pre-circumcised See also:Abraham. Believing in one See also:God, they contented themselves with the See also:Decalogue and the Paternoster. Declining to be classed either as Christians or See also:Jews, they were excluded from the See also:edict of See also:toleration promulgated by the See also:emperor See also:Joseph II. in 1781, and deported to various parts of the See also:country, the men being drafted into frontier regiments. Some became See also:Roman Catholics, and those who retained their " Abrahamite " views were not able to See also:hand them on to the next See also:generation. ABRAHAM-MEN, the See also:nickname for vagrants who infested See also:England in Tudor times. The phrase is certainly as old as 1561, and was due to these. beggars pretending that they were patients discharged from the Abraham See also:ward at See also:Bedlam. The genuine Bedlamite was allowed to roam the country on his See also:discharge, ABRUZZI soliciting See also:alms, provided he wore 'a badge.
