ALAGOAS , a maritime See also:state of See also:Brazil, bounded N. and W. by the state of See also:Pernambuco, S. and W. by the state of See also:Sergipe, and E. by the See also:Atlantic. It has an See also:area of 22,584 sq. m. A dry, semi-barren See also:plateau, See also:fit for grazing only, extends across the W. See also:part of the state, breaking down into See also:long fertile valleys and wooded ridges towards the See also:coast, giving the See also:country a mountainous See also:character. The coastal See also:plain is filled with lakes (lagoas) , in some cases formed by the blocking up of See also:river outlets by See also:beach sands. The valleys and slopes are highly fertile and produce See also:sugar, See also:cotton, See also:tobacco, See also:Indian See also:corn, See also:rice, mandioca and fruits. Hides and skins, mangabeira See also:rubber, See also:cabinet See also:woods, See also:castor beans and See also:rum are also exported. See also:Cattle-raising was formerly a prominent See also:industry, but it has greatly declined. Manufactures have been See also:developed to a limited extent only, though protective See also:tariff See also:laws have been adopted for their encouragement. The See also:climate is hot and humid, and fevers are prevalent in the hot See also:season. The See also:capital, Maceio, is the See also:chief commercial See also:city of the state, and its See also:port (Jaragua) has a large See also:foreign and coastwise See also:trade. The See also:principal towns are Alagoas, formerly the capital, picturesquely situated on See also:Lake Manguaba, 15 m. S.W. of Maceio, and Penedo, a small port on the See also:lower Sao Francisco, 26 m. above the river's mouth. Before 1817 Alagoas formed part of the capitania of Pernambuco, but in that See also:year the See also:district was rewarded with a See also:separate See also:government for refusing to join a revolution, and in 1823 became a See also:province of the See also:empire.
