ANNONAY , a See also:

town of See also:south-eastern See also:France, in the See also:north of the See also:department of See also:Ardeche, 50 M. S. of See also:Lyons by the See also:Paris-Lyons railway. Pop. (1906) 15,403. Annonay is built on the See also:hill overlooking the See also:meeting of the deep See also:gorges of the Deome and the Cance, the See also:waters of which See also:supply See also:power to the factories of the town. By means of a See also:dam across the Ternay, an affluent of the See also:Mime, to the north-See also:west of the town, a See also:reservoir is provided, in which an additional supply of See also:water, for both See also:industrial and domestic purposes, is stored. At Annonay there is an See also:obelisk in See also:honour of the See also:brothers Montgolfier, inventors of the See also:balloon, who were natives of the See also:place. A tribunal of See also:commerce, a See also:board of See also:trade-arbitrators, a See also:branch of the See also:Bank of France, and See also:chambers of commerce and of arts and manufactures are among the public institutions. Annonay is the See also:principal industrial centre of its department, the See also:chief manufactures being those of See also:leather, especially for gloves, See also:paper, See also:silk and silk goods, and See also:flour. Chemical See also:manures, See also:glue, gelatine, brushes, See also:chocolate and candles are also produced.
