About A.D. 1000 it was conferred by See also:Pope See also:Silvester II. upon St See also:Stephen (975-1038), the first See also:Christian See also:king of Hungary, in return for his zeal in seeking the See also:conversion of the See also:heathen. It was renewed by Pope See also:Clement XIII. in 1758 in favour of the empress Maria See also:Theresa and her descendants. The See also:emperor of See also:Austria bears the title of apostolic king of Hungary.
