ARCHBALD , a See also:

borough of Lackawanna See also:county, See also:Pennsylvania, U.S.A., in the N.E. See also:part of the See also:state, 10 m. N.E. of See also:Scranton. Pop. (189o) 4032; (1900) 5396; (1869 See also:foreign-See also:born); (191o) 7194. It is served by the See also:Delaware & See also:Hudson, and the New See also:York, See also:Ontario & Western See also:railways, and by an interurban electric See also:line. It is about 900 ft. above See also:sea-level; in the vicinity are extensive deposits of See also:anthracite See also:coal, the See also:mining and breaking of which is the See also:principal See also:industry; See also:silk throwing and See also:weaving is another industry of the borough. At Archbald is a large glacial " pot hole," about 20 ft. in See also:diameter and 40 ft. in See also:depth. See also:Arch-bald, named in See also:honour of See also:James Archbald, formerly See also:chief engineer of the Delaware & Hudson railway, was a part of Blakely township (incorporated in 1818) until 1877, when it became a borough.
