ASBURY See also:PARK , a See also:city of See also:Monmouth See also:county, New See also:Jersey, U.S.A., on the See also:Atlantic Ocean, about 35 M. S. of New See also:York City (50 M. by See also:rail). Pop. (lgoo) 4148; (1905) 4526; (1910) 10,150. It is served by the Central of New Jersey and the See also:Pennsylvania See also:railways, and by electric railway lines connecting it with other New Jersey See also:coast resorts both See also:north and See also:south. Fresh-See also:water lakes, one of which, See also:Deal See also:Lake, extends for some distance into the wooded See also:country, See also:form the See also:northern and See also:southern boundaries. It is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Atlantic coast, its numerous hotels and cottages accommodating a summer See also:population that approximates 50,000, and a large transient population in the autumn and See also:winter months. There is an excellent See also:beach, along which extends a See also:board-walk about r m. See also:long; the beach is owned and controlled by the See also:municipality. The municipality owns and operates its water-See also:works, water being obtained from artesian See also:wells. Asbury Park was founded in 1869, was named in See also:honour of the Rev. See also:Francis Asbury, was incorporated as a See also:borough in 1874, and was chartered as a city in 1897. In 1906 territory to the See also:west with a population estimated at 6000 was annexed.
